Port Aransas & Mustang Island
Maybe Its Time You Visited A Texas Beach ...
Welcome to the island - Mustang Island that
is, which is located just north of Padre Island.
Port Aransas is on the northern tip of
Mustang Island and is only about 30 minutes
from downtown Corpus Christi. It is often
referred to as one of the best kept secrets on
the Texas Gulf Coast.
This area offers great fishing, miles and miles
of uncrowded beaches, wonderful shopping
and restaurants, plus some unique site-seeing
opportunities with the USS Lexington Museum
nearby and the Texas State Aquarium.

Texas has over 360 miles of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico and some large barrier islands off the
coast where some of the best beaches are located. If you are familiar with Texas then you probably
have heard of Galveston Island and to the south most people have heard of Padre Island. Mustang
Island is about 18 miles long, stretching from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas. It is just north of Padre
Island and across from Corpus Christi Bay.
One of the benefits of Port Aransas and Mustang Island is that you can enjoy the benefits of two
towns that are almost the complete opposite of each other. Corpus Christi is a fairly large city and has
many activities and attractions, while Port Aransas is a quaint town with only a few thousand people
and a very laid back atmosphere.
Besides stuffing yourself with fresh seafood, building sand castles, and relaxing on the beach, some
of the most popular activities on the island include fishing, bird and nature watching, browsing through
some of the unique art galleries, boutiques, and unusual souvenir shops, or playing a round of golf
along the rolling sand dunes off the coast.
No trip to Port Aransas is complete without taking an excursion into Corpus Christi and visiting some
of the most notable attractions. Both young and old alike will thoroughly enjoy touring the USS
Lexington and checking out some of the exhibits and shows at the Texas State Aquarium.
USS Lexington Museum - The aircraft
carrier rests in Corpus Christi Bay, just
across the ship channel from downtown
Corpus Christi. There are 5 self-guided
tour routes covering 100,000 sq. ft. and
eleven decks. A wide variety of aircraft are
also on display here. Experience a dog
fight, combat, and a carrier landing with the
virtual battle stations. Check out the 3D theatre, or for a really unique and thrilling experience, launch
into battle on the Lexington's flight simulator.
Texas State Aquarium - Located in
Corpus Christi, The Texas State Aquarium
is the premier aquarium showcasing much
of the sea life found in the Gulf of Mexico.
When visiting the beach it is always
interesting to see what lies below the
surface. Enjoy both indoor and outdoor
exhibits and a wide range of attractions.
The dolphin shows are a favorite of many
and sure to bring a smile to your face,
especially when you see some of the
amazing things that they do as they
interact with their trainers.
Even though Port Aransas is a small town, it offers a wide range of accommodations for beach going
visitors. You can choose from condos, luxury beach houses, villas, hotels or cozy cottages. When my
daughter visited here in 2012, she stayed at the Port Royal Ocean Resort and Conference Center
and really enjoyed her stay. They are located close to the beach, but they have a really impressive
swimming pool made up of many large pools connected with water falls. It has a section for small
children, a water volleyball area and a number of hot tubs scattered around the pool area. Click on
the link that follows to get more visitor information for Port Aransas and a list of accommodations
found on the island.
